Beales of Bournemouth It is so disappointing that Beales of Bournemouth is to close along with 11 other stores with plans that the site is to be turned into flats. Beales was founded in 1881 by John Elme Beale and is claimed to be the first department store in the world to have a real Father Christmas in 1885.  During the WW2, the store was bombed in May 1943. This is truly a sad period for Bournemouth - it is certainly not the place it used to be :(
