Ghost Station

metro.co.uk

Engineers working on the new Thameslink have come across a forgotten tube station.   The station, Southwark Park was opened in 1902 and closed down in 1915 during WWI.   Parts of the old ticket hall are to be incorporated in the new railway.

However, take a look at City Hall station in New York that was built in 1904 and unexpectedly shut down in 1945.  It was supposed to be the showpiece of New York's subway system with stained glass, skylights and chandeliers but it's curved tracks were thought to be unsafe for newer, longer trains and so it was shut down.   There had been talks of restoring the station to its former glory but sadly nothing has been done as yet.
