Sister Rosetta Tharpe
March 20th 1915 - October 9th 1973 |
On the One Show tonight, they did an interesting piece on American singer, song-writer, Ssister Rosetta Tharpe.
Rosetta was popular in the 1930s and 40s with her gospel recordings and electric guitar and is regarded as the mother of rock n roll. She was a heavy influence for musicians such as Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Elvis and the Rolling Stones.
In May 1964, whilst on tour in Europe she played in the rain on a disused railway station in Manchester which was televised by Granada TV.
