On Thursday, this book written by Julie Summers comes out on sale.  It includes tales of how women kept beautiful during the World War II when money and makeup were scarce.

When silk stockings became scarce, women would cover their legs in nude coloured makeup.

Stocking seams were drawn on using black eyeliner

Hair was wrapped in scarves which not only hid the hair as shampoo and hair dye were scarce but also kept hair away from machinery when working in on the farms and in the factories.  Hair was usually washed with tap water or washing powder.

To keep morale up, Elizabeth Arden was asked to create a makeup kit for the American Marine Corps Women's Reserves and created a lipstick that matched their uniform.  Even Winston Churchill realised the benefits it had with regard to women feeling glamorous and the war effort so when other cosmetics were rationed, red lipstick remained in production.

During the War, Max Factor was asked by the MOD to create shades of pan-cake makeup for commandos to use as camouflage.

Other makeup tips included:

Using gravy browning as fake tan
For blondes to use lemon in their hair and brunettes vinegar
Make homemade facemarks using oats, lemon and milk
Use talc on the face as a replacement for smooth face powder
Use rags in your hair as an alternative to rollers.
