Hello Sailor

The Breton shirt was introduced as part of the French sailors uniform in 1858.  It was thought that the stripes would help locate sailors if they fell overboard.  In the 1930s, Coco Chanel made the striped shirt a fashion statement when she teamed it with palazzo trousers.
