Hattie McDaniel

10 June 1895 - 26 October 1952

Hattie McDaniel was born in Kansas this day in 1895.  In 1940, she was the first African American to receive an Oscar for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind.   Both Hattie's parents had been slaves.  However, she could not attend the ceremony to receive her award due the segregation laws at the time and at the Atlanta Premiere of the film, the state of Georgia banned any of the coloured cast members from attending.  Clark Cable was very close to boycotting  the event but was persuaded to attend by Hattie.

Hattie appeared in over 300 films but her career was cut short when she sadly died in LA at the age of 52 from breast cancer.
