WW1 Bell from Warship to be Auctioned at Southampton

A bell that has been used as a garden ornament in Bristol for the last 70 years is expected to reach £5,000 when put up for auction in Southampton on the 22nd March.

The bell was from the German battleship SMS Grosser Kurfurst and was among a number of battleships that took part in a raid against Hartlepool on December 16th 1914 which saw 118 people killed and many injured from the shelling.   It was also involved in raids in Scarborough and Whitby around the same time.
