London Beer Flood
I heard this on the radio on the way from work. Did you know that on October 17th 1814, The London Beer Flood occurred?
At the Meux and Company Brewery which was located on Tottenham Court Road, a large vat of beer containing over 135,000 gallons of beer ruptured causing other vats around it to fall in a domino effect resulting in over 323,000 galloons of beer to spill out into the streets.
The wave of beer destroyed two homes and brought down the wall of the nearby pub trapping a young girl in the rubble. The wave then swept into neighbouring streets killing a mother and daughter and surging through a room of people who were gathered for a wake. In total 8 people were killed.
The Brewery was taken to court but it was deemed an Act of God. The Brewery was eventually demolished in 1922 and the Dominion Theatre now stands on part of the former site.
