David Dimbleby, Sailors & Tattoos

Legendary TV broadcaster David Dimbleby has had his first tattoo at the age of 75.  David had a scorpion tattooed on his shoulder whilst making a documentary on Britain and the Sea, which is being shown on BBC this Sunday.

Tattoos were first introduced to the UK as a result of Captain Cook's South Sea Adventures.  Even Winston Churchill sported one.  Most common tattoos amongst the sailors were images of swallows on each side of the chest, girls in sailor hats and a pair of dice.

Famous tattoo artist, Norman Keith Collins (Jan 14 1911 - June 12 1973), better known as Sailor Jerry was famous for his tattooing of sailors.  Aged 19, he enlisted in the US Navy and during his travels got to see the art and imagery of South East Asia.  He remained a sailor all his life and even during his career as a tattoo artist, he was a licensed skipper of a 3-masted schooner which he would sail around the islands of Hawaii.
