Famous baseball player, Joe DiMaggio, full name, Guiseppe DiMaggio, was born in California, this day in 1914.

DiMaggio made his debut with the Yankees on 3rd May 1936 and went on to have a hugely successful career.

In 1952, after retiring from the game, he met Marilyn Monroe and after an 18 months courtship, they got married on January 14th 1954.   Sadly the marriage only lasted a year but they remained close until her death in 1962.    DiMaggio had roses delivered to her crypt 3 times a week for the next 20 years and never married again.
