Vintage Nose Art

The practice of putting personalised decorations on fighting aircraft originated with Italian and German pilots.  The first recorded piece of nose art was a sea monster painted on the nose of an Italian flying boat in 1913.

During WWII, American pilots decorated their planes with pinups such as Rita Hayworth and cartoon characters.  Lucky symbols such as dice and play cards were also painted.  It was regarded as a way of helping the pilots get through the War as well as a good luck charm.
